If you are in need of basic needs financial assistance, contact the Town Office for an appointment to fill out an application.
Need to Know Information:
By State of Maine Law, applicants age 25 or less are the financial responsibility of their parents (if the parents have the financial means).
Applicants must provide evidence of earnings and expenses. Bring copies of pay stubs, bills paid and bills due. Bring documentation of any medical conditions.
Provide complete and accurate information. If you do not, you can and will be disqualified for 120 days and may be prosecuted for committing a crime.
Use your income for basic necessities (food, rent, fuel, utilities, medicine, clothing).
Make every effort to use potential resources, including other government benefit programs, private pensions, support payments, etc.
Attempt to find and accept work.
General Assistance does require reimbursement when you are able. Searsmont does not participate in the Work Fare program.
Sell your non-essential assets at fair market price (vehicles, boats, real estate, etc).
Find affordable housing within your ability to pay.
Check fuel supply (oil, wood, gas) on a regular basis and request GA before running out.
Seek assistance when you receive a "shut off" notice, before being disconnected.
